While there's no foolproof formula for a successful relationship, there are some positive signs, or "green flags," that indicate that you are in a healthy and aligned relationship. Spend a few minutes this week to focus on the relationships in your life and ask yourself if these domains are present: effective communication, trust, reciprocity, respect and emotional support.
In "Off The Cuff" Season 2, Episode 17, Terra Newell joins host Danny LoPriore to share her harrowing story of surviving a knife attack by serial predator and con man John, whom she killed in self-defense when she was only 25 years old.
The shocking incident became the subject of 2018's hit TV show "Dirty John," and in the six years since, Terra has been working through the trauma while raising awareness for domestic abuse.
[Everyone says], 'Well, you know, we need everyone's stories because it's not just your story, you know, it's your mom's, it's this, that.' I understand that they all have stories, but the reason why [John] isn't here today is because of me. And I have to hold onto that trauma and I have to live with that. And I am the only one that has to live with that. (27:05)
In this episode, Terra opens up about when she first realized something wasn't right about John, the manipulative tactics she witnessed him using on her mother, and how the experience has impacted her relationship with her mom.
With raw honesty, Terra also shares how being a trauma survivor and living with C-PTSD has altered virtually every aspect of her life, from dating to physiological changes to just getting through each day. She discusses some of the techniques that help her cope.
It's still like, I wish I didn't have to do that. Like I wish the cops could have handled it, but you know, everything happens for a reason. And I have to lean on that reason when those days come up because you know, I wanna be normal some days. I wanna be as normal as I can. (44:06)
This powerful episode sheds light on the long-lasting effects of trauma and domestic abuse. While Terra's story is her own, it will no doubt resonate with many survivors out there. Remember, if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you are not alone. Reach out for help and support.
