While there's no foolproof formula for a successful relationship, there are some positive signs, or "green flags," that indicate that you are in a healthy and aligned relationship. Spend a few minutes this week to focus on the relationships in your life and ask yourself if these domains are present: effective communication, trust, reciprocity, respect and emotional support.
In "Off The Cuff" Season 2, Episode 19, Dr. Judy Ho joins host Danny LoPriore to share her unique perspective as a triple-board certified clinical and forensic neuropsychologist. With a diverse range of experiences, from evaluating maximum security prison inmates to serving as an expert witness in criminal trials, Dr. Ho offers valuable insights into the complex world of mental health.
"Everybody needs therapy, probably. It might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I hope that it's not because you feel like there has to be something majorly wrong with you to go to therapy." (37:29)
In this candid conversation, Dr. Ho opens up about her personal journey, including her experience emigrating from Taiwan as a child, and delves into thought-provoking topics such as the differences between men's and women's love styles and why people settle in relationships.
She also sheds light on the challenges of working in the criminal justice system as a woman, sharing a poignant conversation with a supervisor who warned her about the difficulties she would face.
"My supervisors [were] like, 'Why do you wanna be an expert witness in criminal cases?' I'm like, 'Well, I think it's interesting. And I think I can help.' And one of my supervisors who is a woman was like, 'Take it from somebody who worked there for five years in the beginning of my career – it is not a walk in the park.' But it's never a comfortable environment. Sometimes it's a maximum security prison and it's really tough. You have to be escorted everywhere, including to the bathroom. All of your liberties are taken away, at least temporarily. And I'm not saying that that's anywhere near the liberties that [the inmates] lose, but it's like even just that tiny taste of it is [difficult]." (20:42)
Throughout the episode, Dr. Ho emphasizes the importance of therapy for everyone, regardless of whether they feel they have significant issues to address. As a mental health practitioner herself, she openly discusses the benefits of receiving counseling and encourages listeners to view therapy as a valuable tool for personal growth and well-being.
This insightful episode offers a rare glimpse into the multifaceted world of mental health, as seen through the eyes of a highly experienced and compassionate professional. Dr. Ho's unique perspective and candid storytelling make for a compelling and thought-provoking conversation that is sure to resonate with listeners from all walks of life.
