One of the best ways to foster connection is to prioritize quality time: Make a conscious effort to spend quality time with your loved ones, whether it be going on a date, having a family game night, or simply having a phone call to catch up.
In "Off The Cuff" Season 2, Episode 23, host Danny LoPriore welcomes Hannah Blum, a mental health advocate living with bipolar disorder type 2, for a candid and eye-opening conversation about her journey.
Hannah shares her powerful insight into the indiscriminate nature of bipolar disorder:
"There's no face, no salary, no class, no race, nothing. Anybody, at any time. Bipolar disorder, it doesn't have like a specific person it goes after. It pretty much takes anyone."
The episode delves into Hannah's experience as a teenager, outwardly seeming "normal" but inwardly struggling. She recounts her path through substance abuse, reaching a breaking point in college, and her subsequent involuntary institutionalization. Despite the challenging circumstances, Hannah found motivation in an unexpected place:
"I think the thing that's positive that came out of the hospital too, was that it motivated me. They told me don't look back, don't look back Hannah. And now I see why they didn't want me to look back. Ya know, they said, 'these people, you won't see them, they don't have hope, you do.' And I thought, what the hell is wrong with you?!" (49:38)
This pivotal moment sparked Hannah's journey into mental health advocacy and writing. As she immersed herself in the mental health community, she experienced a profound shift in perspective:
"So when I got involved in the community, what ended up happening was, I'm with other people with bipolar disorder, in rural America, some of the poorest people I have ever met, and they are out there with their pamphlets doing advocacy, and they have mental illness. And I started saying to myself, these people are amazing. They are kind, they are empathetic, they are supportive, they are cool, why am I believing that this makes me a monster?" (17:00)
This episode offers listeners a raw and honest look at living with bipolar disorder, challenging stigmas, and finding strength in community. Hannah's story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of understanding, empathy, and advocacy in mental health.
