Did you know that women have a higher likelihood of experiencing depression and anxiety compared to men? So for this week, take a moment to reflect and consider the women in your life and define one way you can support their emotional needs, which can look like having a non-judgemental conversation, listening to understand, not responding, and being supportive by asking them what they need. And if you are a woman reading this, consider the people in your circle who you can ask for help supporting you through your mental health. Don't forget that sometimes asking for help might look like seeking professional and therapeutic support.
In "Off The Cuff" Season 2, Episode 24, host Danny LoPriore welcomes Ally Salama, a Forbes 30 under 30 Social Entrepreneur, speaker, podcaster, founder of EMPWR MAG, and The Middle East's Mental Health Ambassador. This episode offers a profound look into the challenges of mental health awareness in the Middle East and Ally's personal journey of self-discovery and advocacy.
Ally shares a striking insight into the stark difference in mental health awareness between the West and the Middle East:
"We fear what we don't understand, you know. Mental health in the states, you have hundreds of millions of dollars in media and advertising being spent on awareness. Because they know, the West really knows the price, the burden that mental health has on economies." (3:04)
Despite his privileged upbringing and numerous accomplishments, Ally struggled with a sense of alienation that he couldn't quite place:
"I always knew I was different, but I'd never understood that it could make me feel alienated." (18:06)
This feeling of being different, coupled with his experiences living in various countries before adulthood, shaped Ally's unique perspective on mental health and drove his passion for advocacy.
Ally also shares powerful insights on personal growth and maintaining confidence:
"Action breeds confidence, and then confidence, if you don't really work on it, you lose it. And that comfort makes you less confident because that comfort comes from consistent action from you being always at that cusp of your comfort zone." (11:10)
This episode provides listeners with a valuable glimpse into the challenges of mental health advocacy in different cultural contexts, while also offering universal lessons on personal growth, resilience, and the importance of pushing beyond one's comfort zone. Ally's story serves as an inspiring example of how personal struggles can be transformed into a powerful force for change and social good.
